Harmonic Technology Pro-9 Reference SE2009 speaker cables

by Robert H. Levi, Positive-Feedback Online, Mar/Apr 2009

The boys at Harmonic Technology never rest. They are driven by supreme audiophile Jim Wang to improve their designs and indeed they do! I wrote about the under-priced and over-performing Pro-9 Reference bi-wire speaker cable, the first cable in their reference series, just two years ago. It was a terrific speaker wire and one I used as reference against many more expensive designs. [Even ARC used it at RMAF in 2007.] The 2009 version, now shipping, pushes its performance so far that you must, absolutely must, check out a trade-in immediately of your original version.

Yes, you have read it before, why consider a more expensive cable with the Pro-9 2009 around. The retail price is $1499 for Spade connections and $1699 for Banana connections for 2.5 meters, external bi-wire. Its convenient connection of one pair of spades on one end and a pair of spades and a pair of bananas on the other is still there. However, the cable is more flexible …make that very flexible…and the tweeter wire is now about 80% as big as the woofer wire. HT uses more high tech Teflon insulation increasing the isolation of the wires. They are 100% super pure single crystal copper. I love their added flexibility for winding around tight corners.

Stereophile: Playhouse Serves Up Music

Stereophile: Playhouse Serves Up Music

The modest-looking system being demmed by Atlanta dealer Playhouse Audio was my final stop on the first day of the Show but turned out to be one of the highlights of that day. Nola’s new three-way Contender speaker ($3400/pair) was being driven by an Audia Flight FL2 integrated amplifier, with the source a Mach 2-modified Mac mini feeding USB data to a Peachtree iNova that was being used as a DAC. Cabling was all Harmonic Technology: Pro-10 speaker cable and Magic 2 interconnects, as well as a Silver Oval interconnect from Analysis Plus and a Platinum USB cable from Wireworld. In one of those too-rare audiophile moments where one track organically led to another to another to another. I listened to Dave Grisman and Tony Rice (“Turn of the Century" from Tone Poems), Taj Mahal and V.M. Bhatt (“Come On Over My House"), Herbie Hancock and Luciana Souza (“Amelia" from River: the Joni Letters), but a discovery for me among the music played was a live version of Nat King Cole’s “Nature Boy" by Swedish singer Lisa Ekdahl. Nice. Very nice.

Melody III Phono Cable

Melody III Phono Cable (OCC Crystal Silver and Copper Phono cable)

Harmonic Technology’s Melody III Phono Cable (OCC Crystal Silver and Copper Phono cable) is a state-of-the-art, dedicated interconnect cable for use with the finest cartridges and turntables. It is considered a top-of-the-line reference phono interconnect that is able to transmit low signal levels with high resolution, without the loss of detail. Available with our RCA-RCA plugs only, it was designed to provide the highest level of transparency and harmonic richness possible from your analog system.

Melody_III_Phono_Cable

Harmonic Technology has engineered the Melody III Phono cable with our proprietary Twin-Shield design and quad conductors of metal filaments. By utilizing two different shields (a braided shield with grounding pigtails and one aluminized Mylar shield adjacent to the conductors), the noise floor is vastly improved. The quad conductors and two OCC Single Crystal Silver and two OCC Single Crystal copper improve base and tweeter impact and liquidity.

The Melody III Phono cable will transform the sound of your system and convey a complete sonic tapestry. It delivers a vast increase in clarity and transparency, combined with deeper, tighter bass and liquid highs. The harmonic richness in the vital midrange will sound as if you were at a live concert.

Truth III Phono Cable

Harmonic Technology’s Truth III Phono cable (OCC Single Crystal Copper Phono cable) is a state-of-the-art, dedicated interconnect cable for use with the finest cartridges and turntables. LP-10 Phono Cable ( Only China Limited Version )

Harmonic Technology LP-10 Phono Cable
From the appearance, The LP-10 might appear to be no different from ordinary interconnects. Once revealed the internal construction, you will know they are far from similar. It is very tricky to deal with low level electrical signal produced from the minute mechanical movement of the cartridges. The signal could be as low as 0.1 mV for some very sensitive cartridges.

The Balancing Act of Phono Cable Design
It is not uncommon to see many unsuspecting vinyl lovers use ordinary interconnects to connect their turntables to the phono stages. While this may work, the signal loss is far too great to be acceptable by any serious vinyl lovers.

When designing the LP-10, our team of engineers set out to establish the best technical design by balancing conductor size, conductor material, insulation material and insulation wall thickness. These allowed our engineers to produce cables that are tailor made to transmit low level signal over a maximum distance.

To best preserve the low level signal, we use our proprietary 26 AWG 7N high purity OCC single crystal copper cable to start off with the design. We then use Teflon as cable insulation, Teflon is known to have the lowest dielectric constant after air. This combination has allowed us to achieve the best balance between resistance and capacitance correlation. The signal output from our raw LP-10 cables maintain the required wave form definition and minimize possible detail losses.

Once the raw cables achieved our stringent requirements in measurements, our engineers started to look into external interference that could pollute the low level signal. Here, we employed three separate techniques to achieve 99.9% of shielding effectiveness.

Firstly, we developed our Opti-Twist method to achieve a consistent 45 degree twisted-pair for our raw cables. The torque force used is unique to us after numerous trial and error. This torque force was found to give the lower-mids its textural tangibility. (You won’t miss this when listening to the LP-10)

Secondly, we covered the twisted pair with a layer of copper foil and thirdly, we used our OFC braided Matrix Weaving Shielding on top of the copper foil. To our engineers, there is never too much of shielding for low level signal.

The Final Touch
We thought we have a winning product and started making them for final listening test. To our surprise, though the cables measured almost perfectly, there is a certain “hardness” to the sound. Our engineers started scratching their head and one actually started relooking into the whole design. We forgot about mechanical insulation for our cables!

We added a thin layer of paper-based insulation and hoped that it would not over-dampen the sound. We got our fingers crossed. The final LP-10 sounded neutral, open, refined and capable of bringing out the best from the different tonearms and cartridges we tested with. This could be the reason you rediscover all your records.
